Gascon’s Heroes

The new Los Angeles District Attorney hadn’t had a chance to warm his seat before patriots started the process of removing him from office. People are so desperate to vote blue no matter who in Los Angeles because they hated Trump and the Republicans, they removed a moderate black Democrat District Attorney for a far left socialist Hispanic from San Francisco. The people of San Francisco worked hard to remove George Gascon only to see him scurry into Mayor Garcetti’s open arms.

The California legal system is extremely convoluted and seeking justice is a long hard battle. Murders never get the death penalty and often, unless seriously grievous or heinous a crime, they go free after serving a portion of their sentence. Those who’ve been a part of the revolving door of the Justice System have no fear or consequence because with time and laws, soon enough your turn to go free will come. Los Angeles District Attorney, George Gascon is speeding along the process by reclassifying crimes and thereby eliminating what scholars call “enhancements” to charges. Prior convictions, type of weapon, gang, or hate crimes add to penalties and ensures that a crime gets appropriate punishment.

Drunk drivers kill 28 people in America every day and Los Angeles is home to one of the bloodiest roads on the planet, Highway 138. Every week there is a death on this long stretch of road and for the residents who use it as their only main thoroughfare LA has been promising to fix it since 2001. I lost my own uncle to a drunk driver and in my travels to various rallies have encountered others like myself. When we begin to share our stories, I’m horrified to hear that the people who committed the crime of driving drunk and killing another are out on bail, or reduced judgements. One woman committed 3 years of her life to her daughter after a drunk driver left her a paraplegic, only to succumb to her injuries. No lawyer notified her that her daughter’s killer was in fact living in a halfway home, and not jail; She had to seek that information herself.

This weekend California is slated to release close to 76,000 inmates. Under Gascon’s new leadership, meanwhile, Covina is the seventh city to vote no confidence in directives and more are sure to follow. Having met the mother of a local victim, I was horrified to learn that her sons killer was eligible for a reduced sentence. Charles Briggs, a black man, lost his life not because of a gun, but because of a bow and arrow.

These victims are hurting years later and George Gascon wants these heroes to wander our city streets.
