As I read the ether(news feeds) today, I stumble across the news story in which Democrat candidate Scott Peters promoted and shared a blog written by John Aravosis; since then the page has been removed. As gays around the country cry foul because a hetero supports calling a gay man “Mary” by his peers, Aravosis dismisses his use of the pejorative as “ironic endearment” in the gay community. I beg to differ.
Upon further reading of his blog, I notice that nearly every mention of Republican is preceeded by a pejorative of some sort; his favourite is self-loathing. While I admit that I am far from perfect, I am not however, self-loathing. Self hatred involves hating my country, my community, and my heritage. I love my country, am disappointed with the gay community, and constantly research my own cultural heritage. My disappointment in the gay community doesn’t come from its rejecting of me, it’s from its own shortsightedness.
DeMaio’s story is one of success in the face of personal hardship and he has a proven record of working across party lines for the betterment of the entire community. In your column, you pen that Carl DeMaio is a traitor to his fellow gays because he’s not putting the desires of about 4% of the population before the other 96%. It’s a bit hypocritical, especially since the left has been banging the drum of the 99%er crowd for a while. Here, you have a man that is a powerhouse for the people, doing what’s good for everyone, and you’re worried about yourself; how self-absorbed.
My rights do not supercede anyone else’s, and the economy should be everyone’s focus, not bedroom politics. If you must bring bedroom behaviour into it, let’s talk about the overwhelming support pervert Bob Filner had among the LGBT community last election cycle, even HRC gave him a 100% civil rights rating! Or, shall we discuss the sad fact that about 50% of long term gay relationships (married or not) are open resulting in potential danger of std’s and violence. A politician, especially mayor, has no place discussing bedroom behaviour if they are to positively benefit the entire city.
Gay marriage and it’s national recognition seem to be a focus for you, but over half of our community can’t or won’t respect the traditional institution of a pair bond, you know, two people only? I’m excited to see a candidate unafraid to stand next his long term partner on the campaign trail greeting supporters, more so when he’s met with roaring cheers. These people don’t need to support him because he’s like them, they need to support him because he’s the right candidate, and they do. You however, need to hate him because he threatens the progressive stranglehold the Democrats have on minorities.
Get your ad homonym attacks ready because I’m sure more than one has crossed your mind. If you haven’t guessed yet, I too am a conservagay, and proud of it. Funny thing, the only people who can’t tolerate me are people who use pejorative terms like mary, nigga, hustla, pocho, and more in an attempt to “take the power away” from it’s negative connotation. I simply don’t use them ever, unless I mean them, mary.
