When we think of the word warrior, we often conjure images of battles and cinematic scenes that plaster our screens, but sometimes the warriors that make the biggest difference are the warriors we don’t see. Small voices who gain little traction or challenge the norm are small jewels that I’m excited to follow and present to my audience.
With Coronavirus on everyone’s lips, I want to recognize every healthcare worker who wears protection and puts themselves in the direct path of a killer pathogen. These heroes are not alone in their effort to keep our country moving. Truck drivers and law enforcement are working double time to ensure that your groceries arrive to restock shelves or disburse crowds that refuse to comply with social distancing.
My heritage is Hispanic, and the hispanic story conquered several indigenous peoples. My people, the Purepecha, witnessed the horrors brought upon their enemy, the Aztec, and chose to adapt rather than be eliminated. Adaptation is one of life’s greatest keys to success and without it our species will not endure. As doctors search for a cure for CoVID19, we are adapting to life online. Children are learning through screens, million dollar business is being conducted in the living room, and even drag queens are performing livesteams for tips via Cashapp/Venmo/PayPal.
The women of my ancestral village succeed in overcoming the disease that plagued their home, and we’ll win this microbial battle; I have faith in that. Small heroes, little voices, and those who refuse to accept defeat are what makes humanity such a success story. First responders, soldiers, and even the supportive housewife are heroes in their own ways. Every once in a while, tell them “Thank You” I know they appreciate it.
