Unicorn Jousting

“Leaders don’t create followers, leaders create more leaders” I’ve heard this saying before and I really try to apply it to my daily life. Empowerment comes from one person to another and if we’re building one another up, we’re an unstoppable force, especially the rarest of all creatures, the unicorn.

Unicorns have gained popularity and are lavished with such affection that we’re beginning to see subtle digs from the stallions and ourselves.

Let me tell you about Cocktail Politics, I’ve hinted before because it served as a great experiment in political culture and I’m my case, LGBTQ tolerance. People like exclusivity. As much as they’ll feign “me no”, humans as a species want to be part of the “in” group. As barbaric as the parallel is, almost all primates and mammals behave this way. Everyone wants to be a winner, this LGBTQ conservative group was no exception.

This rare group in 2008 crumbled eventually into other smaller groups with their own budding followings. Small rifts appeared over marijuana, marriage, religion and guns as the group grew and covered larger issues. The moderator chose favorites and removed argumentative types eventually leading to a mass exodus of members. Building a coalition with everyone reaching for the top instead of building a stable foundation is a recipe for disaster. Remaining grounded and supporting figures who were willing to engage peacefully keeps the best of these spawned group active today.

Unicorns have to remain humble because without the people who donate and reinforce our herd, they’re nothing. They’re a horse with a horn lost in the landscape. We’ve all seen channels get erased at a moments notice, so followers mean nothing if you don’t have their hearts. People will wonder, “where did they go?” then the thought gets washed away with the news cycle. Look at me me in my little corner of the world affecting a positive energy because in the end we’re all going to pull the lever together. That’s my message, always has been.

Some unicorns become figures that we champion for movements but they’re not lowering themselves to the status of confronting ugly protestors. Fine, stay out of the mud, but always remember that the spotlight also shows our flaws. Leaving the comfort of a hotel room or even our home is a staged production and we should be prepared for almost anything. Aninimety is a luxury that fame does not allow and even Dolly Parton hides her skin art diligently.

While Scott Presler cleans up city after city showing what love for country can do, we quibble over who’s doing what. I’ll never tell people what to do, but I will say that it’s disheartening and dulls our iridescence. This unicorn herd faces larger issues than who’s got the bigger horn. Take your magic and use it for a better America, not a better you; that comes from your heart.
