Of all the demographics in our country, the most respected group is often the most overlooked. Veterans serve their country in many capacities but some transition well into society, and some struggle. America promises adoration and support, but anyone who’s had an aging servicemember knows, resources and companionship disappear with complications. One local group, Antelope Valley Veterans Community Action Coalition, is seeking to change the direction and create a supportive infrastructure for our soldiers, infantry, airmen, and specialists of all types.
This non-partisan group of veterans meets weekly for breakfast at Scramblez Cafe near Palmdale City Hall. Veterans from Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, and more share stories about their lives in the armed forces and current happenings. Some servicemen are joined by their adult children who provide transportation and familiarity for the group. Crayon jokes are abundant and inter branch razzing occurs as if in a shared chow hall.
Newcomers are welcomed like old friends and 92 year old Veteran Merele “likes to sit with the stranger so he leaves knowing someone.” Representatives from JVS Social Care and the American Legion also attend to lend their support and services.
JVS Social Care is a network providing assistance for veterans in need of housing, claims, jobs, benefits, healthcare access, and legal services.
The American Legion, chartered in 1919 is one of the oldest veteran organizations in the country, providing relaxation and fellowship for American military veterans trying to adjust to society. Post #348 is happy to report that local Army Veteran Lou is finally joining the American Legion at 99 years old and celebrating his 100th birthday this October.
Coffee 4 vets is for all military families and meets at Scramblez Cafe adjacent to Palmdale City Hall every Wednesday starting at 7:30am. The Antelope Valley Veteran’s Community Action Coalition (AVVCAC) is a 501c (3) Nonprofit corporation dedicated to assisting veterans find the resources available to them in the Antelope Valley and with the Veterans Administration.
